Police blamed for Kalubowila hospital morgue crisis

The Colombo South (Kalubowila) Teaching Hospital mortuary has stopped accepting unclaimed bodies brought from outside as 28 unclaimed bodies have been lying there for 14 months without postmortem examinations being conducted.

Hospital Director Dr Sagari Kiriwandeniya has conveyed the hospital’s decision to the Mount Lavinia Police division, hospital sources said.

They said the decision was taken to avoid a situation where the body count could far exceed the morgue’s capacity. This is because the Police who sent the bodies to the morgue fail to produce the next of kin at the post-mortem examination.

The hospital’s morgue has 36 drawers, of which 28 has been occupied by bodies brought from outside, leaving only six for those who die in the hospital, the sources said.
