Sri Lanka’s urbanisation has increased to 45 per cent from 18.5 per cent in 2012 in the past 10 years with rapid population growth and a hike in migration of people from rural areas.

According to a new survey conducted by the National Physical Planning Department in Sri Lanka, urbanisation in Sri Lanka has increased to 45 per cent in 2022.

Director General of the Department Gamini Hewage said that urbanisation remained at an average of 18.5 -18.8 from 2012 to 2021 and it increased to 45 per cent in 2022.

Resolving Sri Lanka’s urban paradox and developing a better understanding of the country’s cities is an important issue because policy makers are increasingly focused on urban development.

According to the new survey, Homagama and Kollonnawa Pradeshiya Sabha areas in the Colombo District and all Pradeshiya Sabhas in the Gampaha District have undergone rapid urbanisation at present.

The most obvious indicator of the urban data deficit is the widely ranging figures of the size and rate of growth of the urban population.

The difference between an urban population of 18 per cent and 50 per cent suggests the absence of an appropriate, accepted definition of what constitutes an urban area, a senior Finance Ministry official said.

Such uncertainty presents significant barriers to understanding urban systems making it difficult for effective urban policy making, he explained

He added that the report of the survey is to be submitted to the Cabinet following which the government will make decisions with regard to future urban planning,

The new survey was conducted by the National Physical Planning Department recently on the directions of Minister Prassanna Ranatunge in accordance with the Town and Country Planning Act.

The main indicators of the survey are population density, number of houses, supermarkets and super clothing and readymade garment shops located within a 10 km distance, public schools and shops number of flats and houses given on rent or lease

Other indicators include the proper disposal of garbage collected by local government authorities and the number of people engaged in non-agricultural jobs living in Pradeshiya Sabha areas.
