View(s):The Faculty of Medicine, University of Colombo, Sri Lanka, established in 1870, is the undisputed premier medical school in the country. The Faculty takes pride in its 150 years of history and tradition, and has the expertise, technology and resources to train post-graduates and other aspiring candidates in the health-related areas to meet the modern-day demands. Faculty of Medicine Colombo is now accepting applications for the 2023 July intake of the following programmes.

Master of Science in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology
This full-time MSc programme provides hands-on experience in fundamental laboratory techniques
required for biochemistry, molecular biology, and cell biology and will guide students to publish their research findings in scientific journals. A variety of teaching-learning methods are used to additionally strengthen teamwork and communication skills. The programme is intended for graduates in the fields of biological sciences, chemistry, agriculture, medical professionals, indigenous health professionals, bioinformaticians, researchers, and medical laboratory technicians who are looking to advance their careers. Theory and practical classes are mainly onsite. Sessions conducted by invited local or international resource persons may be online.

Postgraduate Diploma in Health Development
The course is designed for doctors, nurses, NGOs and other healthcare professionals to give a broad overview of the health sector and issues related to health using a multidisciplinary approach. It is especially aimed at professionals working in health and health related areas in the public or private sector, or NGOs, who wish to broaden their understanding on health.
The programme focuses on the concepts related to health, the dynamic nature of its determinants and analyses the multifaceted nature of the health system and related organisations. It is geared to equip the learners to apply the knowledge and skills gained to analyse present and future challenges in health development and to take an advocacy role in encouraging others to view health outcomes to be a result of policies and advances in other sectors. The course consists of lectures by experts, student seminars and small group discussions and a dissertation based on a simple research project.

Certificate course in Infection Prevention & Control
Hospital associated infections are a leading cause of increased morbidity and mortality in patients and healthcare workers. In view of the above, the Faculty of Medicine, University of Colombo is offering a certificate course in infection prevention and control.
This course is intended to improve the knowledge and skills on infection prevention and control in health care professionals responsible for the prevention of healthcare-associated infections in all settings, whether hospitals, clinics or family practice offices. The specific personnel include doctors and other healthcare professionals (nurses, physiotherapists, medical laboratory technicians and healthcare administrators).

Training Programme in Clinical Genetics
This three-months short course conducted by the Human Genetics Unit is designed to equip medical doctors to integrate genetic and genomic information into their routine clinical practice. It provides training in the core concepts in clinical genetics and genomics and the use of genomic data for guiding clinical decision making in the healthcare setting. The course contents are delivered under 3 modules; Module 1: Basic cytogenetics and molecular genetics, Module 2: Genetic diagnostics and ethical issues, and Module 3: Genomic medicine and genetic counselling. This programme will enable trainees to understand the effects of chromosomal abnormalities and genetic variations on human health and disease, assess risk of inherited diseases, use clinical evaluation and genetic testing to diagnose genetic disorders, select appropriate genetic diagnostic tests, interpret results of genetic tests, and provide accurate genetic information and advice to patients, their families and the community. A certificate of completion is awarded to trainees who are successful at the final assessment.
