View(s):By Ranjith Padmasiri
The Attorney General has informed Police Inspector General Chandana Wickramaratne to name Western Province Senior Deputy Inspector General (SDIG) Deshabandu Tennakoon as a suspect in the case regarding the violence at Galle Face, on May 9 last year.
The Attorney General has directed the IGP to charge SDIG Tennakoon with aiding and abetting those who attacked peaceful protesters at Galle Face, by failing to carry out his duties.
In addition, the Attorney General has also instructed the Police to name 33 other suspects over the violence that took place at Galle Face on May 9 last year. They include former minister Johnston Fernando and State Minister Sanath Nishantha.
SDIG Tennakoon is one of the front-runners to become the next IGP after the retirement of IGP Wickramaratne, whose term was extended by a further three months last month.
