Rain spoils 104th Hill Capital Battle of the Blues

The 104th Hill Capital Battle of the Blues between Trinity College and St. Anthony’s College ended in a draw, after rain consumed a major portion of the game at Katugastota yesterday. However, the John Halangoda Trophy went to Trinity, who dominated St. Anthony’s by curling them for 110 runs in the first innings and posting 221 runs in reply.

After the home team who were shot out for a low 110 and Trinity continued from their overnight total of 86 for no loss. Trinity intentionally went for quick runs in order to earn an outright win on the second day. They did everything correct but the afternoon rain with thunder and lightning took the Antonians to safety.

Skipper, Rahal Amarasinghe top scored in the game with 66, while Manula Kularatne (44), Dinusha Peiris (37) and Kusal Wijethunge (34) hit brisk knocks for Trinity to maintain an average of five runs an over. Antonian spinner Kaveesha Piyumal bowled brilliantly for the home team, not allowing the visitors to score at will. He took ended up with figures of 4 for 31 in his spell of 11 overs. St. Anthony’s batting for the second time were in deep trouble losing three early wickets for 38 before the heavy downpour around 1.45pm stopped play. After observing the situation, the match was called off after tea with light fading out fast.

Trinity skipper Rahal Amarasinghe walked away with two individual awards presented, claiming the player of the match and best batsman’s awards. Antonian spinner Kaveesha Piyumal was adjudged the bets bowler.
