King Charles to host C’wealth ‘summit’ on Ranil’s proposal
View(s):King Charles III is to host a special meeting of the Commonwealth Heads of State and Government on May 5, the day before his coronation, after such a meeting was suggested to Buckingham Palace by President Ranil Wickremesinghe through Commonwealth Secretary-General Patricia Scotland.
President Wickremesinghe recently wrote to Ms. Scotland stating that, with the ascendance to the throne by King Charles, as the new Head of the Commonwealth, it was opportune to evolve a stronger Commonwealth towards which it was timely to deepen interaction on the future vision of the Association and its future role among its members. The Commonwealth currently has a membership of 56 independent nations.
He proposed that, with the concurrence of Rwanda’s President Paul Kagame, who is the current Commonwealth Chair-in-Office, the Secretary-General should consider seeking an early opportunity for the Commonwealth Heads of State and Government to engage with the King. He had verbally mentioned this meeting to Ms. Scotland when she attended Sri Lanka’s 75th anniversary of Independence celebrations in Colombo in February.
King Charles III will meet the Commonwealth Heads of State and Government at Marlborough House in London, where the Commonwealth Secretariat is based.
President Wickremesinghe will attend the coronation and the Commonwealth summit, the President’s Office said.
