Sadeesh, Hiran shine before rains arrives
St. Joseph’s skipper Sadeesh Jayawardena hit an unbeaten century (110n.o.) and Hiran Jayasundara remained 91 not out as they shared an unfinished 161-run third wicket stand before a heavy downpour brought an early end to the 86th Battle of the Saints encounter concluded at SSC yesterday.
Opener Jayawardena had seven boundaries and a six in his 115-ball innings while his partner Jayasundera, with seven boundaries, was well set for a big match hundred when rain spoiled the Joes run feast against their traditional rivals St. Peter’s. They were 29 for no loss at the end of day one after St. Peter’s were bowled out for 214. Chamindu Perera (66) and Rusanda Gamage (55) hit half centuries, propelling St. Peter’s score but it was pacer Gagan Chamod who stole the limelight claiming 5 for 69 for the Joes.
