Rough weather warning: Met Dept
View(s):The Meteorology Department officials called the public to pay attention to warnings and advisory issued by them as a lower atmospheric disturbance is to occur over the Bay of Bengal during next few days.
Duty forecaster at the Meteorology Department, Chathuska Premachandra told the Sunday Times that there is a possibility that the lower depression situation could escalate into a cyclone.
“It is too early to say whether the condition would escalate, as still the lower atmospheric disturbance is to occur, but we have already issued advisories to fishing communities of the possible atmospheric disturbance,” she added.
She said that according to the area where the atmospheric disturbance occurs, the effect on the country would differ, therefore people are requested to pay attention to their warnings.
Due to the prevailing weather situation, the western and southern coastal areas could experience wind speeds of 40-50 km per hour.
The general public is requested to take adequate precautions to minimise damages caused by temporary localised strong winds and lightning during thunder showers.
Disaster Management Center (DMC), Deputy Director, Pradeep Kodippili noted that they have alerted all DMC district offices as well as area Police to stand by in case of any disasters should occur due to adverse weather situations.
