AIS Students win Gold for Sri Lanka
View(s):Shaylon Gunaratna of Asian International School won a Gold medal at the Asian Rowing Beach Sprint Championship held in Pattaya, Thailand recently. This was the first time a Sri Lankan had won a Gold medal for beach rowing at an international event.
Shaylon who is 16 years of age, overcame stiff resistance through the waves and six other competitors to finish 1st in the Single Sculls event in the Men’s category, creating history for Sri Lankan rowing.
Shaylon then partnered with schoolmate Rovinya Wijesekra in the Mixed Sculls category to secure the Bronze medal. Rovinya and Shaylon have both been rowing for Asian International School and have won many inter-school and national meets.
This was the very first time Sri Lanka competed in the Asian Rowing Beach Sprint Championship organised by the Asian Rowing Federation and hosted by the Rowing and Canoeing Association of Thailand.
It was truly a proud moment for Sri Lanka when the National Anthem was played and the National Flag was hoisted at an international sporting event thus bringing credit to the country.
Asian International School felicitated these two outstanding sports persons at a special assembly organised in school to celebrate this tremendous feat.
