Gateway College in the forefront of AI Education
View(s):Gateway College, known for its forward-thinking and visionary education, has been a pioneer in introducing cutting-edge technologies to its students. Understanding the importance of staying ahead of the curve in today’s rapidly changing technological landscape, last year, Gateway took the initiative to introduce an Artificial Intelligence (AI) curriculum through its partnership with AIClub-USA.
AIClub-USA is a USA-based institution led by Computer Science PhDs from top US universities with decades of industry and research experience in AI and software. They provided training to the teachers at Gateway College to carry out the AI curriculum that has been designed by them. Through this programme, students learn about the context in which AIs are used worldwide, and gain necessary skills to build their own AI projects. They discover how to build, measure, and improve AIs using Python coding and data science. They are also taught how to combine AI technology with websites and mobile apps to create impactful solutions to a wide range of problems related to healthcare, environment, and product design.
Recognising the need for teachers to stay abreast with the latest developments, Gateway also took steps to educate its staff on the possibilities and concerns surrounding the use of AI platforms such as ChatGTP. Gateway’s Team Leader for Change Management, has already conducted several sessions on ChatGTP and other AI tools in education, such as DALLE-E-2, Midjourney, and AI-incorporated Microsoft Office 365 tools through the Training Tuesday CPD programme that Gateway has in place.
To further enhance their understanding of AI, the CEO and the Founder of AIClub USA, also conducted training sessions for all Gateway teachers. These sessions provided the teachers with a thorough understanding of AI and its uses in education.
Gateway also took a bold step by introducing a new category at their inter Gateway Digital Art Competition that was held recently by including a segment in AI-Art. Enthusiastic students submitted over 200 AI-generated artworks, which gave them the opportunity to explore a new concept that is being referred to as ‘prompt engineering’.
As the only Microsoft Showcase School in Sri Lanka, Gateway offers specialised programmes on robotics, encourages design thinking through their Innovation Labs, and provides students with facilities such as Maths Labs and ICT Labs to further their mission of providing future-ready students. Gateway has also been recognised by two of the biggest TELCOs in the country as a Dialog DigiEdu Model School and an SLT EdTech Specialist School.
