IT programme to be added to Arts Degree
View(s):The double degree programme introduced for Arts Faculty students to gain a degree in Information Technology, in addition to the normal degree will commence from this academic year, Chairman of the University Grants Commission Sampath Amaratunga said.
He said some 3,000 students will be entitled to gain an IT degree after completing a Technology Diploma as part of the course. He added that the objective was to produce graduates with jobs guaranteed. Prof Amaratunga said the course was designed in a manner that when they leave University they could be absorbed by private companies.
Currently about 25% of students who enter universities register for Arts degrees. In most cases, they face difficulties in employment. The programme has been introduced to minimise these issues.
Prof Amaratunga said 3,000 students will be selected based on their Z-score marks. The UGC hopes to double the figures next year.
Arrangements have been made to provide the required academic staff, as well as the necessary infrastructure facilities. According to Prof Amaratunga Rs 400 million has been spent to set up the IT lab facilities and other infrastructure. This is the first time that such an opportunity is being provided for Arts Faculty students.
