Operation to locate 2.3 million vehicles that have not renewed their licences
View(s):The Department of Motor Traffic has launched an operation to locate an estimated 2.3 million vehicles that had not renewed their revenue licences for years.
Commissioner General Nishantha Weerasinghe said the department had asked the chief secretaries of the nine provinces to furnish details of such vehicles by checking their database for vehicles that had not obtained revenue licences over the past five years.
Based on this information, district motor vehicle inspectors have been instructed to track down such vehicles and report back on what has happened to them.
The chief secretaries had asked for one month to furnish the relevant details, Mr Weerasinghe said.
The operation to locate the vehicles was launched after the department found that while 8.3 million vehicles were registered with it, only six million had registered for the QR code fuel system.
“We don’t know what has happened to these vehicles and that is a real concern,” Mr Weerasinghe said. The department has announced that it will blacklist vehicles that have not obtained revenue licences for the past five years. It has warned that it will remove these vehicles from its information system.
Once the department obtains details of these vehicles, it will compile a report and forward it to the Minister of Transport and Highways. The minister will then submit a Cabinet paper detailing measures he proposes to take regarding these vehicles, the Commissioner General said.
