Rains to ease despite cyclonic condition in Bay of Bengal
View(s):The prevailing wet weather condition will fade away after tomorrow, the Department of Meteorology said. The cyclonic storm “Mocha” over East-Central Bay of Bengal has turned into an extremely severe cyclonic storm and has the high probability to make its way toward northeast and cross Southeast Bangladesh and North Myanmar, the department said.
The department urged the people and fisher folk to be alert to its warnings.
“Impact of this cyclonic system on Sri Lanka is unexciting. The Department has already foreseen that low level of atmospheric disturbance is possible and showers above 75mm could break out in the Western, Sabaragamuwa, Central and Northwestern provinces in addition to the Galle and Matara districts in the south,” Forecasting Director Dr. Shiromani Jayawardena said.
The depression’s presence in the bay would further trigger blustery winds and stormy sea conditions, she said. Navy personnel and fishing communities had been asked not to venture into the deep or shallow sea areas.
“Since this is an evolving situation, the intensity movement and track of this system could vary dramatically. This event will fade away eventually after tomorrow and rains will taper out in these places. With this in view we are very likely to experience a delay in monsoon rains,” Dr. Jayawardena added.
