Bento feast of Thai flavours
Thai cuisine is known for its wonderful blend of sweet, salty, sour and spicy flavours. In an exciting new addition to the Royal Thai at Cinnamon Lakeside Colombo, the restaurant now offers a Thai style Bento Box.
A Bento Box includes multiple compartments meant to accommodate various types of food. Royal Thai’s new Bento Boxes come with a portion of fried rice, a selection between chicken or seafood, two vegetarian dishes and a traditional Thai papaya salad as a starter and a dessert.
The restaurant plans to serve a different variation of the Bento Box each day.
In a tasting held at the restaurant last week, Thai Bento Boxes were served with egg fried rice, red curry chicken, wok fried vegetables, mixed mushroom with ginger sauce and Thai papaya salad with chili paste to accompany.
The Thai papaya salad served with peanuts was a refreshing start to the meal, pleasantly tangy in taste. Ample cuts of wok fried vegetables and different kinds of mushroom and cubes of bean curd were served in a subtle ginger sauce. Both vegetarian dishes were paired next to each other in a single compartment, an interesting mixture that highlighted individual textures and colours of each ingredient.
The Box had a sizeable portion of egg fried rice and the highlight was the red curry, rich and creamy with notes of coconut and spices and plentiful cuts of tender chicken.
For dessert, it was mango sago.
A fine option for anyone seeking a quick alternative to the traditional executive lunch, the Thai Bento Box is priced at Rs. 2600 and is available between 12 noon and 3 p.m. on weekdays.
