Select Committee meets to discuss expanding higher ed opportunities
View(s):The Parliament Select Committee recommended that strict measures be taken to ensure that UGC approval for affiliated universities and courses is not misused for marketing purposes, and given only to the awarding university.
This was discussed at the Parliament Select Committee to make suitable recommendations for the expansion of higher education opportunities in Sri Lanka, which met recently (12) in Parliament, chaired by Minister Wijeyadasa Rajapakshe, PC.
The Select Committee met with professionals and associations to discuss the expansion of the higher education sector, which included Dr Mohan Lal Grero, Tertiary and Vocational Education Commission, Ceylon-German Technical Training Institute, The Institute of Chartered Accountants of Sri Lanka, G T Bandara, Chairman of Royal Institute, and M M M Mustapha.
The SLIATE/ATI student union was called before the Committee to express their views. The Committee was of the view that a mechanism should be in place to use the time gap between receiving GCE Advanced Level Results and entering university.
Regulating various degree-awarding bodies to ensure the quality of higher education was also discussed at the Committee meeting.
Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa, State Minister Seetha Arambepola, Members of Parliament, Minister Rauff Hakeem, Minister Eran Wickramaratne, Prof Charitha Herath, Minister A Aravindh Kumar and Dr Harini Amarasuriya were present at the meeting.
