National War Heroes’ Day Commemoration
View(s):A nation paid tribute to the war heroes of the tri-services, Police, and Civil Defence Forces who made sacrifices in the three-decade-long civil war at the 14th “National War Heroes’ Day Commemoration” held on Friday (May 19) at the Battaramulla War Heroes’ Memorial under the patronage of the President and the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces Ranil Wickremesinghe.
The commemoration was organised by the Ranaviru Seva Authority.
President Wickremesinghe, together with invitees including relatives of the service members, paid floral tributes to 28,619 members of the armed forces who lost their lives in the war.
A total of 23,962 of Army, 1,160 of Navy, 443 of Air Force, 2,598 of Police, and 456 Civil Defence personnel were remembered at Friday’s ceremony.
A day earlier (May 18), citizens in the North and East remembered civilians who were killed during the war. A large number of commemorative events were organised in the north to commemorate the 14th anniversary of the end of the war. The main remembrance event was held at Mullivaikkal in Mullativu in the presence of a large gathering of civilians, including many families who had lost loved ones during the war.
