X-Press Pearl: SJB files legal action against 8 defendants
View(s):The main Opposition party Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) has filed legal action against eight defendants in the Colombo High Court over the May, 2021 X-Press Pearl disaster.
The legal action has been filed by SJB General Secretary Ranjith Madduma Bandara and SJB Parliamentarian Dr. Kavinda Jayawardhana, an environmentalist and a member of a fisherfolk organisation. The defendants include the vessel’s owners, operators, insurers and local agent.
The plaintiffs have filed the legal action in the Colombo High Court in the exercise of its admiralty jurisdiction. They are demanding that the defendants named pay US$ 6.4 billion for the losses and damages caused to Sri Lanka due to the X-Press Pearl disaster.
They noted that the disaster caused damage to the coastal environment and marine environment due to dangerous goods and plastic pellets onboard the vessel, while hoteliers and fishing communities also sustained damage to their livelihoods.
Separately, the owners of a Negombo Hotel and the President of a fisher folk organisation had also filed legal action in the Colombo High Court against the same defendants demanding
US$ 6.4 billion for the losses caused to the country by the X-Press Pearl disaster.
