HelpAge and Give 2 Asia provide dry rations to elders
View(s):The Give 2 Asia international organisation, based in San Francisco Bay Area and working in 23 countries across the Asia Pacific recently partnered with HelpAge Sri Lanka (HASL) to assist over 6,000 elderly citizens living in the Southern, Western Eastern, Sabaragamuwa, North Central, North Western and Central provinces by distributing them with Rs17 million worth dry food items and medical equipment under two projects recently.
Representatives from HelpAge visited 26 Divisional Secretariats and individual elders in 10 districts to make the distribution. Elders received dry rations including 10 kg rice, dhal, big onions, canned fish, tea, sugar, wheat flour, salt and coconut milk.
HelpAge also conducted 12 mobile medical camps and provided health screenings and eye care support for 1,800 older people.
HelpAge Executive Director Samantha Liyanawaduge confirmed that over 100,000 less-privileged elders island-wide were affected during this period and thanked Give 2 Asia for the donation which are helpful to overcome the economic problems faced by them.
HASL Programme Head Chaminda de Silva thanked Give 2 Asia for their generous support towards older persons in Sri Lanka.
