A musical treat from Wycherley
View(s):“Voices Ablaze”- presented by the Choir of Wycherley International School
Recently I received an invitation to a musical performance by school children and my host warned me that they had not performed at a concert of this nature before and that they were greenhorns.
When the performance opened with the song ‘The Hills are Alive’ from the movie The Sound of Music, the hall came alive and I knew that this was going to be a pleasurable experience.
The audience was treated to a repertoire of choral music as well as a few solo performances and they were of such a high standard, considering the ages of the children, that the applause was spontaneous and profuse by the appreciative audience. I know they will not be novices for long and are sure going to be talented singers who will do the country proud in the not too distant future.
There were also the Sinhala and Tamil songs that created an enjoyable interlude in the programme, not to mention a drum performance (or should I say thammetam and geta bera performance) thrown in for good measure that made the entire programme interesting and so likeable. The background scenes carefully chosen to match the songs added meaningful colour to the entire presentation.
I make no comment about the Choral Director who accompanied and directed the music, as you cannot expect anything but the best from Priyanthi Seneviratne-Van Dort.
The youngsters from Wycherly International School who presented the “Voices Ablaze” choral musical performance had no doubt had the enthusiastic backing of their Principal, Dayan Fernando who himself was a choir leader from S. Thomas’ College, Mount Lavinia and the smiling, happy faces of his young charges proved it all. To the surprise of many in the audience the Principal, in fact, joined the students in singing the ‘Hallelujah’.
All in all it was a relaxing and entertaining evening for me, thanks to my host who invited me.
