Education system outdated, needs to be in line with sustainable development: Education Minister
View(s):The GCE Advanced Level Examination results will be released by end of June, Education Minister Susil Premajayantha said.
The minister said this at the certificates presentation of the competition for selecting the best school commerce society held at the Bandaranaike Memorial International Conference Hall by the Education Ministry in collaboration with Sri Lanka Licensed Accountancy Management Institution (CMA).
The O/L exam is being held in 3,500 centres islandwide, while marking of A/L answer scripts are being conducted simultaneously.
“We must try to update students’ knowledge, targeting the aims of sustainable development that has to be achieved by 2030. A rapid change must be done in the education system that has become outdated. Children must be given the opportunity to learn the subjects which help to develop the left and right sides of the brain; and children following medical science must have the opportunity to learn art subjects also, like music,” he said.
“If this does not happen, only pre-schools and primary education will remain within the school system,” the minister said.
He said transformational changes in education have already begun, actions have been taken to teach practical use of English from Grade 1, and aligning with the STEAM education system.
Furthermore, Information Technology and Artificial Intelligence are being taught as subjects from Grades 6-9 and 10-13 in 20 schools islandwide as a pilot project.
