Prison inmates produce sanitary napkins
View(s):
The Prisons Department has launched a programme to produce sanitary products for inmates’ use.
Eight women detainees of the Welikada Prison have set up a unit to manufacture sanitary napkins with the assistance of social worker Mrs Jani Perera.
This initiative has provided solutions to hygiene problems of 500 female detainees.
“Women prisoners mostly rely on family members to provide quality sanitary napkins during visits. Those who do not have any contact with their families tend to use alternatives which could cause various health problems,” Additional Commissioner General of Prisons Chandana Ekanayake said.
“At a time like this, Mrs Perera’s assistance to set up a machine for production of sanitary products is highly valued, as they can get access to quality sanitary items during their incarceration period,” added Mr Ekanayake.
The sanitary napkins are produced under the name “Sinidu”. This production makes inmates employable which helps in their rehabilitation process.
