‘Reach out in service of others as the Buddha preached to overcome effects of pandemic’

Prime Minister Dinesh Gunawardena attended the United Nations (UN) Vesak Festival in Thailand on behalf of the Sri Lankan government.
Delivering the keynote address, ‘Buddhist Wisdom Coping with Global Crises,’ at the UN Vesak Day celebrations, Premier Gunawardena called on affluent nations to declare a universal moratorium on all debt and unserviceable financial commitments accumulated on nations as a result of the unprecedented COVID pandemic.
Speaking further, Mr Gunawardena emphasised that in order to overcome a crisis of such magnitude, the only way is through a collective reach out in service of others, as the Buddha said.
Addressing an audience that included more than 2,000 monks including the Sangharajas of Thailand, China, Bhutan and other religious leaders, the PM said, “as Buddhists, for us, every other crisis is only a new opening to engage in solving and managing issues with a fresh state of mind.”
He also reminded the audience that the UN Vesak Day is celebrated because of a resolution moved on behalf of the Maha Sangha and followers of the Buddha world over, by an exemplary son of Sri Lanka, the late Lakshman Kadirgamar.
