Fragrant new bloom

A white flower variety is being cultivated widely in the Kalpitiya area drawing good business from places of religious worship.
Ms A M A Karunawathi, known as ‘Malrani’ in the area, believes that she has developed a new variety of the traditional ‘idda’ flower, adapting it to the hot climatic conditions.
The new flower known as ‘Jumbo Idda’ is now being cultivated across the area and provides employment opportunities to many.
The flowers plucked here are transported to many religious sites where they are sold in large quantities.
Ms Karunawathi says that she has been able to promote the plant among several cultivators in the area successfully over the years.
