Import restrictions have been lifted with immediate effect on a range of construction industry products, ceramic and bathroom items, non-alcoholic beverages, materials used for carpentry, digital storage disks, wristwatches, and plastic furniture.

Accordingly, import restrictions imposed earlier this year on some 243 varieties of items which also include kitchenware products were reversed in keeping up with the Government’s strategy of easing import controls, with its foreign currency reserves being strengthened. Issuing an Extraordinary Gazette under the Imports and Exports (Control) Regulations No. 02 of 2023 amending the earlier one issued in January, President Ranil Wickremesinghe in his capacity as Minister of Finance, Economic Stabilisation, and National Policies signed the notice which came to effect from Friday.

Toilet papers, materials used for carpentry, digital storage disks, wristwatches, and musical instruments have been included in the revised list.

Other items on which the import ban has been lifted are vacuum cleaners, electromechanical domestic appliances, microphones, loudspeakers, plywood products, rubber products such as gloves, mittens, glassware used for common purposes, sanitaryware, aluminum structures, hand tools, spoons, forks, knives and cutting blades.

Accordingly, the Customs Director General is authorised to release any cargo of these items that arrived in the port from April 2020 to June 8 but had not been cleared. This is to be done with the approval of the Controller General of Imports and Exports, subject to payment of an additional fee of 15 percent of the total Cost, Insurance and Freight (CIF) value of the consignment.

However, import restrictions on vehicles, auto parts, plastic goods, and agricultural products will remain intact until further notice.
