Pearl Protectors invite you to a magical oceanic world
View(s):World Oceans Day is celebrated globally on June 8 and in Sri Lanka. The Pearl Protectors, a youth led marine conservation organisation is celebrating the event through education, art and by calling to action towards conserving the ocean.
Over the month of May, participants of all ages submitted artwork for a competition themed “World Ocean Day Through Art.” The competition was divided into two categories: Open Category and School Category. After careful consideration by marine scientists and artists, 30 illustrations have been selected and are on display at the One Galle Face Mall until today
In addition to the art exhibition, the event features a Mega Turtle Mural showcasing the impact of ghost nets and plastic pollution, a replica of a sea turtle nest, and an exhibit highlighting transboundary litter and nurdle contamination. The Pearl Protectors also demonstrate innovative ways to upcycle and reuse marine plastics, such as repurposing ghost fishing nets into designer wear.

The celebration offers a unique opportunity to deepen our understanding of the ocean and the challenges it faces, said the organisation. Attendees, including children and adults, can also engage with ocean and environmental enthusiasts, advocates, and experts.
