‘Hallelujah!’: Choir festival to mark Anglican Cathedral’s 50th anniversary
View(s):Where would you have the opportunity to hear 12 of Sri Lanka’s leading choirs under one roof?
It’s happening on Saturday, June 24, at 6.30 p.m. as most of Sri Lanka’s best exponents of choral music are coming together for ‘Hallelujah!’ at the Anglican Cathedral of Christ the Living Saviour, at Bauddhaloka Mawatha (next to BMICH).
The largest choir festival in recent times featuring such a stellar line-up, ‘Hallelujah!’ as the programme is titled is being held in celebration of the Anglican Cathedral’s 50th anniversary which falls in November this year.
The choirs taking part in Hallelujah are: Asteria (female voice choir), Bishop’s College PPA Choir, Choro Benedicte, Ladies’ College OGA Choir, Menaka Singers, Metho Cantati, Noted, Sangeet, The Lylie Godridge Singers, The Old Joes’ Choir, The Peterite Chorale and Revelations.
The programme is presented by the Choir of the Cathedral of Christ the Living Saviour directed by Ishan de Lanerolle, a familiar name in music circles as the sonorous bass in the De Lanerolle Brothers duo, who has been directing the Cathedral Choir since 2012. Under his guidance, the choir has presented many successful music programmes.
The 12 choirs will each sing one song individually and then will join together in singing the Hallelujah Chorus conducted by Ishan as the programme reaches its grand finale with another maestro – Neranjan De Silva at the organ.
Three more choirs were originally to take part – Camarati, Soul Sounds and Voices of Praise when the choir festival was originally scheduled for a different day but could not fit in the new date, says Ishan, who is delighted at the response for the Choir Festival. Hallelujah! is bringing together some 260 choristers under one roof, offering a rare chance for music lovers to enjoy a feast of choral music.
Doors will open for ‘Hallelujah!’ at 5.30 p.m. Entrance is free and all are welcome but the organisers request those attending to obtain an invitation to help them with organizing the seating. Invitations are available at the Commons Coffee House and at the Cathedral office during working hours.
The programme is scheduled to conclude at 7.50 p.m.
