RASSL lecture on ‘Lusitanian Legacy in Sri Lanka’
View(s):Portugal’s intervention in Indian Ocean trade began in the Early Modern Period. The Portuguese encounter with Sri Lanka is a consequence of its engagement in international trade and overseas expansion. Whilst the Dutch and British waves that followed the Portuguese have over-shadowed the Portuguese impact, the Lusitanian legacy continues, albeit transformed, in the sociocultural fabric of the island.
Even though “Portuguese” was replaced by English as the international lingua franca, the numerous Portuguese words that have been adopted by Sri Lankan languages – Sinhala, Tamil, Sri Lanka Malay – illustrate the extent of intercultural contact and transculturation. Moreover, the Lusitanian legacy continues through popular genres of music such as kaffrinha, vada baila and chorus baila.
Professor Shihan de Silva Jayasuriya, Senior Research Fellow, Institute of Commonwealth Studies & Senior Associate, Lucy Cavendish College, University of Cambridge will speak on the ‘Lusitanian Legacy in Sri Lanka’ in the Royal Asiatic Society of Sri Lanka’s (RASSL) monthly lecture.
The lecture will be on Monday, June 12 at 5 p.m. at the Council Room of the Royal Asiatic Society of Sri Lanka, 96, Ananda Coomaraswamy Mawatha, Colombo 7.
