XTANT, the global craft platform, held its third annual gathering of heritage crafts in Palma Mallorca, Spain and taking part this year was Selyn Textiles from Sri Lanka.

Selyn’s team joined 53 artisans from 25 countries at XTANT which this year took fibre, the universal building block of textiles, as its central theme. From exploring the roots of fibres to their renaissance in art, the event delved into various aspects of this essential material through a series of thought-provoking conferences.

A highlight was the traditional craft market held in the courtyard of the Can Vivot manor house, where artisans showcased their creations. A key element in promoting Sri Lankan craft globally lies in highlighting what makes the country unique and the weaving techniques and local fibres presented at XTANT captivated many attendees.

“We showcased two significant projects, ‘White Sesath’ and ‘The Village Tote’, both utilising undyed natural fibres and traditional weaving techniques that celebrated the communities still preserving these exquisite art forms. It was a fantastic opportunity to promote Sri Lankan craft on the world stage,” said Selyna Peiris and Robert Meeder, co-founders of Selyn Textiles.

Kavita Parmar, the event organiser, and textile expert, expressed her excitement about Sri Lanka’s participation, saying, “Sri Lanka has always been a cradle of craft creativity, and it has so much to share and offer to the world. We were thrilled to witness Selyn Textiles present and showcase the essence of Sri Lankan craft and innovation. I had the pleasure to connect with young aspiring Sri Lanka designers through the EU Mission in Sri Lanka and Cultural Relations in 2022, I am eagerly looking forward to discovering more of Sri Lanka’s offerings.
