Gateway wins sixth consecutive Esports title
View(s):Gateway College emerged victorious in the highly competitive Inter-School Esports Championship (ISEC), securing their sixth consecutive championship title. This remarkable achievement reinforces Gateway College’s position as a dominant force in the realm of competitive gaming.
Since their initial triumph in 2016, Gateway has consistently defended their title and this year’s championship proved no different, as Gateway put on an awe-inspiring display of skill and determination, securing the highest number of medals that included three gold, two silver, and one bronze. Ananda College, Colombo secured the second position, while Colombo South International School was placed third.
The Inter-School Esports Championship, organised by Gamer.LK’s and powered by SLT-Mobitel, stands as Sri Lanka’s largest esports event at school level. A total of 92 schools from across the country participated, making it a highly competitive and thrilling tournament.
The championship featured a diverse selection of 19 game titles, captivating the attention of passionate gamers from both national and international schools. Bandaranayake School Gampaha, Lyceum International School of Wattala, Maliyadeva College Kurunegala, St. Joseph’s College, St. Mary’s College Negombo picked gold medals in the tournament. Asian International School, C.W.W. Kannangara MMV, Defense Services School, Dhammissara National College, Nalanda College, Royal College Polonnaruwa, Vavuniya Tamil Central, St. Peter’s College, Zahira College, Carey College and Horizon College International also made it into the medal table.
Esports, short for Electronic Sports, is the competitive play of video games – an officially recognised sport in Sri Lanka by the Ministry of Sports. Gamer.LK began the championship with the intention of showcasing the positive benefits that structured and regulated Esports at a school level can have.
Gateway College is the first school in Sri Lanka to award ‘Colours’ for esports to their players acknowledging the significance of esports within the sporting world.
This recognition aligns with the global trend of embracing esports, as it has now been included as a medal sport in the Asian Games. Furthermore, in March 2023, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) announced the launch of the Olympic Esports Series 2023, a prestigious global virtual and simulated sports competition developed in collaboration with International Federations (IFs) and game publishers.
