Established in the year 1953 by the late Rev.Fr. Peter A Pillai OMI with the blessings and inspiration of His Eminence Thomas Cardinal Cooray OMI, 6th Archbishop of Colombo, Aquinas College of Higher Studies is an esteemed non-profit institution administered by the Catholic church under the patronage of the Archdiocese of Colombo, Sri Lanka. Soon after registering with the Ministry of Education of Ceylon as Aquinas University College in 1954, it was shifted to the present premises at 30, Gnanartha Pradeepaya Mawatha, Colombo 08 in 1955 with the prime intention of facilitating ‘Truth in Charity’.

On the 22nd December 2004, Aquinas College of Higher Studies was approved as a Degree Awarding Institute by the University Grants Commission (UGC) and was gazetted by the Hon. Minister of Education on 10th October 2005. The college is bestowed with both a national and international community of scholars, enliven by the Christian inspiration and especially through the creative use of an inter-disciplinary approach.

Aquinas College of Higher Studies is registered with the Tertiary and Vocational Education Commission (TVEC) of Sri Lanka to conduct Professional Courses and Examinations at the Tertiary level to assist the students who are longing to enter the technical and industrial market. The College is also affiliated with the International Federation of Catholic Universities in Paris and works in close collaboration with Universities and Higher Educational Authorities in order to provide opportunities for students to excel in higher education.

Aquinas offers a wide range of academic and professional qualifications in the fields of English Language and Education, Agriculture, Science and Technology, Humanities, Social sciences, and Business Management. The following faculties and the respective departments of each academic division are at the service of the students to provide them with the necessary guidance to select the suitable qualification for their future careers.

The administrative divisions such as Research and CSR center, Quality Assurance and Management System Unit, Counselling centre, and marketing and media unit have been established to assure the quality of all internal academic activities, business development opportunities, and student wellbeing.  All the academic and administrative divisions and units work towards achieving the goal of creating the best academic experience for all the students equipping them with the necessary skills to excel in their careers.

The Annual Convocation and Awards Ceremony, the most significant and prestigious event of Aquinas College of Higher Studies, took place on June 2nd and 4th, 2023, in the Archbishop’s House Auditorium in Borella. The occasion consisted of eight sessions.

The Convocation Ceremony was graced by the Chancellor, His Eminence Malcolm Cardinal Ranjith, Archbishop of Colombo. In his welcome speech, The Vice Chancellor / Rector of ACHS, Very Rev. Dr. Sylvester Ranasinghe stated to the graduands and the diploma recipients, “I don’t doubt for one moment that you have the skills, you have intelligence, and knowledge to be a force for change. You are the generation that can drive that recovery. Be authentic leaders who serve rather than being served. Be servant leaders. This is your moment. This is your turn. For the sake of our country, I hope you will be equal to this challenge. I feel that Sri Lanka deserves your skill, your talent, your dedication, and your leadership.”  With a GPA of 3.925 and the gold medal for the Bachelor of Arts (General) degree, Ms. Chrishanthi Sanjeewani Perera was awarded for the best academic performance of the year 2023. The presentation of the Long Service Awards was a notable. For their dedication and devotion, Ms. K. D. Dayani Samarawickrama, Academic Head, School of Agriculture (34 years of service), Ms. K. Manori Dilrukshika Peiris, Subject Clerk, Kalutara Branch (28 years of service), Ms. M. Nilakshi Priyandika Anne Cooray, Finance Assistant, Department of Finance (29 years of service), and Ms. W. M. Lakmini Inoka Ranasinghe, Coordinator, Department of Examinations (26 years of service) received awards.

The honoured guest of the Diploma Awarding Ceremonies was Mr. Geeth Kumara Dayananda, Chief Operating Officer, Plantations and Sustainabilty, Elpitiya Plantation PLC and the President of the Past Pupils’ Association, School of Agriculture of ACHS.

Dr. Madhubahashini Disanayaka Ratnayaka, Senior Lecturer, English Language and Teaching Unit, University of Sri Jayewardenepura added dignity to the awards ceremonies on the 4th of June.

The Convocation and Awards Ceremony 2023 of Aquinas concluded presenting 163 graduates and 1153 diploma holders to the proud nation of Sri Lanka.
