Esala Perahera of the Ruhunu Kataragama Devalaya from June 19 to July 4

The annual Esala Perahera of the historic Ruhunu Kataragama Devalaya will be held from June 19 to July 4.

The traditional Kap Situweema or planting ceremony for this year’s Esala Perahera took place at an auspicious time on May 6. The Perahera of the Ruhunu Kataragama Devalaya will take place on June 19, 45 days after the Kap Situweema ceremony.

The Perahera schedule is as follows: the Magul Perahera will be held from June 19 to June 29. The fire walking ceremony will be from the night of June 29 till the early hours of June 30. The Magul Perahera will be held again from June 30 to July 2. The final Magul Perahera will take to the streets on July 3. The Esala Perahera will officially come to an end with the Diya Kapana Mangalya at the Kataragama Menik Ganga.

Basnayaka Nilame of the Ruhunu Kataragama Devalaya Dishan Wickramaratne Gunasekara has made all arrangements to hold this year’s Esala Perahera in a grand scale while adhering to ancient traditions.

Meanwhile, the Kataragama National School, Sellakataragama Maha Vidyalaya and the Detagamuwa Junior School will be closed from June 19 to July 3 as they will serve as accommodation for police officers who will be deployed to provide security for the Perahera.
