Roads around the Karadiyana garbage dumping site too are being used by people to dispose waste.

Garbage collecting on the roadside

Area residents complain of the foul smell .

These residents and a community action group, said they are also facing breathing difficulties due to the foul smell.

They said many people who use the roads near the Karadiyana garbage dump toss bags of garbage in the area while travelling in vehicles. More and more garbage dump sites keep appearing alongside the roads.

Suresh Indika, an area resident, said even though people were asking for a ‘system change’ they continued to illegally dump garbage and did not feel any shame in doing so.

He said police officers and public health inspectors, who were supposed to take action against those who caused environmental damage and inconvenienced others, had not done so.

Garbage had also been dumped into a canal in the area, polluting the water.
