Kandy National Hospital still using rope-pulled lift
View(s):By Sohan Vipulananda
A manually-operated lift serving the ‘Bhikku Ward’ of the National Hospital in Kandy is in need of urgent repairs.
The lift has been used to move patients, doctors, and ward helpers over a few decades.
The Dermatology Unit of the National Hospital in Colombo also has a manually-operated lift.
The director of the National Hospital in Kandy, Dr. Iresha Fernando confirmed that the lift is still in use. She said the rope had been donated by a foreigner a few years ago.
The lift had been installed when the hospital was built. “This lift is very old and only the ropes have been changed,’’ she said.
Senior officials have asked the Ceylon Electricity Board and the Government to replace the rope.
Dr. Fernando said help has been sought from the Sri Lanka Navy because similar ropes are used to tie up vessels in the harbor.
The chairman of the Kandy District Development Committee, M P Gunathilaka Rajapaksha said replacing the rope will cost between Rs. 350,000 and Rs. 400,000. “Once we get the funds we will be able to replace it soon.”
Mr. Rajapaksha assured that the lift can be used by patients, doctors and others.
