No hotel please, say N’Eliya post office staff and area residents

A protest was held against a proposal to convert the historic Nuwara Eliya post office into a tourist hotel, by post office staff and some area residents.
While the district’s Government Agent insisted the post office will remain intact and only part of the land will be given for the hotel project, the protestors said this conversion is not feasible due to the post office’s aging infrastructure. They also said the building’s historic value would be tarnished.
The protestors have begun signing a public petition against this proposal.
However, District Secretary Nandana Galaboda said the venue was selected for its tourism potential, but postal activities would continue uninterrupted, and the land behind the post office had been earmarked for the proposed hotel.
A similar proposal was suggested in June 2017, and resulted in heavy backlash. The United Postal Trade Union’s Front began an indefinite strike which resulted in the halting of the hotel project.
The historic red brick, two-storied post office building was built in 1884 by the British. Its architecture was structured in accordance with the British Tudor style. This is one of the oldest buildings in Sri Lanka and is located in the centre of Nuwara Eliya town.
