President on official visit to the UK and France
View(s):- Will participate in the Global Leaders’ Summit at Paris on June 22 and 23
President Ranil Wickremesinghe left for the United Kingdom and France yesterday for an official visit.
The visit will see the President also participate in the Global Leaders’ Summit for a New Global Financing Pact. The summit is scheduled to take place in Paris on June 22 and 23.
The President is accompanied by a high-level delegation that includes his Chief of Staff and National Security Advisor Sagala Ratnayake.
The Summit highlights the urgency of finding solutions to the multiple crises plaguing the global community, such as climate change, bio-diversity loss, the ongoing impacts of COVID-19, escalating conflicts, and growing inequalities, the President’s Media Division (PMD) said.
Such issues have significantly restricted the financial maneuverability of nations and pushed public debt levels to record highs.
These issues have jeopardised the achievement of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the targets outlined in the Paris Agreement on climate change and the Kunming-Montreal agreement on biodiversity.
President Wickremesinghe will be attending the Paris Summit at the invitation of French President Emmanuel Macron. The Summit aims to establish a shared vision for reforming the multilateral financial sector and charting a path towards a de-carbonised
global economy that aligns with the SDGs.
