Though local government authorities carry out dengue inspections at households and private properties some of the public places in Colombo are left unchecked.

Gutters along rooftops of Pettah shops are littered with bottles, bags, drink cans and yoghurt cups. With the recent rains, water had accumulated in them making them ideal dengue breeding grounds.

The overhead crossings at Pettah and Maradana, too, were areas which raise concerns as here too there were many water accumulating areas and garbage left unchecked.

Though the authorities urge people to keep their houses free of dengue breeding grounds, public places remain unchecked allowing more people to be potentially exposed to the dengue mosquitoes which spread the disease.
