A Sub Inspector was hospitalised with injuries after he was run over by a threewheeler that was illegally transporting a live buffalo. The injured SI was part of a team led by Yakkalamulla Police OIC who attempted to stop the trishaw near Udugama on Friday evening. The driver had accelerated on seeing the police and ran down the SI. The driver and a passenger had abandoned the vehicle and fled the scene.
The OIC I. Ranatunga had then given chase to the trishaw driver for about 1 ½ kilometres before finally catching up with him and placing him under arrest. However, the passenger had escaped.
The injured SI was admitted to the Udugama hospital.
When the police inspected the threewheeler they found a buffalo with its legs tied together inside. It is suspected the buffalo was being transported to be killed for its meat.
