Dinesh Wijeratne who has been collecting stamps since he was a Boy Scout in his younger days was among the 20 philatelists that united in friendly competition to sell their most valued stamps, coins as well as notes at the Sri Lanka Philatelic Bureau this week.
Exhibitors proudly showcased their fascinating collections at the Colombo Stamp Show. It opened on Thursday, June 15 and ends today.
Uthpala Vithanage, publicity officer at Sri Lanka Philatelic Bureau, told the Sunday Times that the show is held every four months. It aims to foster the hobby of stamp collecting and to introduce it to the younger generation.
The show is an opportunity for collectors regardless of their age to share their knowledge.
The Sunday Times learns that only 300,000 stamps are produced per release. After the last date of sale, the value of the stamps increase, and then sold for a higher price by collectors.
Among the buyers was the regional manager of a private company based in Negombo, Shanaka Sandaruwan, a collector since 2001.
As a proud owner of a collection of about 4,000 stamps, he buys to preserve them for future generations. “It’s like reading books,” he says, highlighting the knowledge one can gain.
As philately is a subject that connects both the young and the old alike, many more like Shanaka as well as school children were seen buying items to add to their personal collections.
