The world premiere of the groundbreaking documentary ‘The Genius of the Place: The Life and Work of Geoffrey Bawa’ will take place on July 15 at 4 p.m. at the Scope CCC Cinemas in Colombo.

The premiere will be a charity event in association with the Ladies College Old Girls’ Association, to raise funds for the renovation of their hall.

The film by Superb Productions will be followed by a Q&A session with its director, Afdhel Aziz.

The documentary focuses on five of Bawa’s pivotal creations, and sheds light on how he blurred the lines between the outside and the inside, essentially decolonising 20th century architecture and showing the way to live more naturally,  and sustainably.

‘The Genius of the Place’ celebrates pioneering projects ranging from landmark hotels, ocean fortresses and jungle resorts to private residences like the Ena De Silva House and the ‘Red Cliffs’ House, to his magnum opus – the country estate Lunuganga crafted over the course of five decades. In each location, a connection is illustrated between ‘The Genius of the Place’ – the unique spirit which Bawa used as his inspiration, and his creations.

Geoffrey Bawa: Sri Lanka's visionary architect

Despite many challenges throughout the years – the restrictions of building materials in post-war Sri Lanka, a thirty year conflict that fractured the country, opposition from environmental and religious groups, and a series of strokes that left him paralysed – Bawa prevailed, creating a body of work that is legendary in scale, scope and ambition.

While he has been celebrated in multiple publications in Sri Lanka and other parts of Asia, his work has remained largely undiscovered by global audiences.

Using stunning aerial photography, this documentary shows the deep inter-relationship between Sri Lanka’s breathtaking landscapes and these buildings which blur the line between building design and landscape architecture.

Conceived and created by Sri Lankan filmmakers, this project celebrates an icon for the country and its people.

Tickets priced at Rs. 2,500 will be available for sale at the Ladies’ College OGA Secretariat from July 4 (Monday – Saturday) between 9 a.m. – 1 p.m. For more information, call 0112575469.
