Historic first for Rajans over Trinity
Dharmaraja College clinched a historic first when they brought down a much fancied Trinity College side by 17-15 in the Dialog Schools Rugby League match played at Bogambara yesterday. At the short breather, the Rajans led 10-0.
Rajans settled in early and played cohesive rugby. Their three quarters and forwards combined well. They kept on attacking. Meanwhile Trinity took time to settle and were slow in their moves. Even their three quarters looked a yard slower.
However, after the turnaround Trinity bounced back and looked a better side in fitness and skills. But in the last five minutes, once again the Rajans regained the rhythm and scored under the posts to seal the game. This was the first win for Dharmaraja against Trinity in their 55-year-old rugby history.
For Dharmaraja Isuru Bandara scored the first try and it was converted by Sadeesha Weerawansa, as Uchitha Wijayaratna followed with a penalty to take them to a clean 10-0 lead at halftime.
After the turnaround Trinity scored through two tries from Sachindu Weerasekera and a try from Abith Jameel. Later Ishara Wijewardana powered his way through for a winning try for the Rajans. Wijayaratna converted to edge out Trinity 17-15 and seal a historical win.
