Coconut cultivators convinced of Synergy organic fertiliser
A bold initiative to introduce organic liquid fertiliser, to a market that faced the worst crisis in adopting this eco-friendly system of agriculture, has been taken by a new company interested in saving agriculture and giving back life to the soil and increasing yields.
Mizuho Synergy headed by its Managing Director Director Ishan Gunasekara is behind the successful implementation of the Synergy (NI) liquid organic fertiliser that is today yielding results in a number of coconut plantations in the country.
Farmer and former Planters Association Secretary General Senehe Seneviratne told the Business Times that having used the product for about a year and since it is a liquid fertiliser, it is 100 per cent absorbed and it has yielded good results.
He noted that about 40-50 per cent of the fertiliser is lost when granular fertilisers are applied whereas this liquid fertiliser helps to allow it to be absorbed completely through the roots when applied about three feet from the base of the coconut plant. But it has also been tried as a folia application which is possible particularly for crops like tea and paddy.
Mr. Gunasekara who worked on developing this product noted that Mizuho Synergy is a company that is using the expertise of a number of professionals in the field of agriculture like professors, doctors and microbiologists with Dr. Niroshan Gamage as its CEO.
This liquid grade organic fertiliser is derived from biogenic technology and is made of living organisms requiring only two applications per year and is marketed at a very affordable price as well.
For an adult plant about Rs.180 per application is required and Rs.9000 is the price of a 25 litre can sufficient for 50 adult trees. A young palm requires Rs.112 per application at the rate of Rs.9250 per 25 litre can be sufficient for 83 trees. Mizuho Synergy has a laboratory in Kandy for carrying out the necessary Research and Development; a probiotic plant in Colombo and a nutritional plant based in Kurunegala, Mr. Gunasekara said.
The company ensures that plantation owners reap good results and also help save labour costs; ensure organic yields; and help plantations convert to organic farming in a shorter time frame.
Mr. Gunasekara noted that while it is generally perceived that organic fertilisers can be expensive they have been able to come up with a product that is yielding results and is also sold at a lower cost than inorganic fertiliser.
“We are a 100 per cent alternative to inorganic fertiliser,” he said and all products are made to order and are freshly brewed that can be applied during the dry and wet seasons which is another advantage in the use of this fertiliser.
Former Coconut Growers Association President Ranjith Dias said he has been applying this Synergy organic fertiliser and as a result they have seen some improvement in the crop in his own estate and expects to see a successful crop harvest in the third year.
He noted that though he has not tried out any organic fertiliser previously this fertiliser has proved to be good and is also available at an affordable price that is half the price of the chemical fertilisers in the market.
Moreover, the poultry farms in Sri Lanka have taken advantage of liquid probiotic supply to the industry for over a decade in the market and this is said to have helped farms go green and helping control environmental conditions such as odour control, and poultry litter management and decomposition.
The product sold to the poultry farms is added to the water that is being consumed by the livestock.
Other areas that the company has brought out solutions is in waste water management under the brand name “Bio Solv” that is considered to be an organic septic tank cleaner.
