Colleges of Education diploma course to be extended to degree course
View(s):The diploma course of the Colleges of Education will be extended up to four years as a degree course in the future, Education Minister Susil Premajayantha said.
He said teachers who have already completed the diploma course will be given the opportunity to complete the degree.
The minister added that the post-graduate courses offered by the South Asian Center for Teacher Development at Meepe will be helpful for this purpose in the future. This programme will be organised in collaboration with the National Institute of Education and the Teacher Training Colleges.
The minister said this during a ceremony to grant teaching appointments to 7,342 diploma holders.
Minister Premajayantha said it was possible to give teaching appointments to 7,342 diploma holders from 19 Colleges of Education as the foundation for this was laid in the 1980s when President Ranil Wickremesinghe was Education Minister.
He said among the other services were establishing the National Institute of Education in 1980 and introducing the Act of Colleges of Education in 1985.
Teachers receiving their appointments were welcomed to the education system by the minister as pioneers who will engage the children in quality education going forward to achieve sustainable goals by 2030, through a transformative change in education including the subjects of Artificial Intelligence and Technology coupled with the STEAM education method.
