COPA looks at several issues in education sector
View(s):Several issues over expenses in the education sector have been raised at the Committee on Public Accounts (COPA) meeting held in Parliament this week.
Among the issues were the expenses amounting to Rs 3.4 billion for the purchases of tabs in 2019.
It was revealed at the meeting that the expenses were not put into proper use.
It was also revealed that in 2013 and 2014 Rs 64 million had been spent for the NEMIS programme to build a database for Education Management. However the data was not available.
Another revelation made was that
Rs 60 million had been spent for payments for an Office Assistant for the past year without assigning him any duties. However, after a decision was taken to cancel the appointment, the employee has filed a case claiming over 30,000 euros.
COPA called for a report on the matter within a week.
It was also revealed that in 2020 A/L classes attendance had dropped, but since the figures were outdated the Committee decided to call for updated figures.
