Prime Minister Dinesh Gunawardena, this week, instructed local government authorities to prepare a database of school dropouts in their respective areas.

This was to ensure school dropouts follow vocational training and equip themselves with skills – increasing their employability.

The Prime Minister said input for the school dropouts database should come from divisional secretariats, and the authorities were instructed to take immediate measures to ensure that school leavers are engaged in vocational training – a prerequisite for employment opportunities. He also said divisional secretariats should record from each and every student the reason for dropping out from school.

School dropouts from low-income households should be able to follow vocational training free of charge, Mr Gunawardena emphasised.

The PM highlighted that students leaving school after GCE O/Ls and A/Ls who do not continue with further education would have negative impacts on their personal development, and face a series of social issues.
