Renewing her joy in painting

‘Reflections in Colour’ on July 5 and 6 at the Lionel Wendt Art Gallery in Colombo will be a renewal of the journey Jayani Pinnewale began nearly three decades ago when she was serving as Sri Lanka’s Deputy Ambassador in Italy. She held her first solo exhibition in the Isle of Capri and also took part in joint exhibitions in Rome where she blossomed into a professional artist.

Although she began painting in oils quite late in life, she had always been attracted to colours while still a student at Visakha Vidyalaya. Having dabbled in water colours, her creative flair came to the fore when she tried her hand at oils.

A former career officer in the Sri Lanka Administrative Service, Jayani held many senior positions including Commissioner of Internal Trade and Additional Secretary of Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, yet continued painting during her free time.

“I am glad that I have been able to pursue my interest and develop my talent. “If I had not gone to Italy, I don’t think I would have done painting.” Painting oils has given her contentment and mental relaxation, she says. Her visits to more than 100 countries broadened her canvas. Visiting museums and enjoying the works of well-known artists, helped develop new dimensions in her painting.

This time, she will exhibit mostly birds and landscapes and has around 60 paintings ready.

Real life incidents have also had a profound impact on her creativity. “My painting ‘Helplessness’ is a good example of how the tsunami devastation influenced me during those awful days we encountered that calamity. I have attempted to portray this sad episode which remained in my memory for a long time,” she said.

The exhibition will be held at the Lionel Wendt Art Gallery on July 5 and 6 from 9.30 a.m. to 7.30 p.m.
