It’s a rare opportunity to hear internationally renowned pianist Shani Diluka, described as an “exceptional” pianist by Le Figaro, when she performs with the Symphony Orchestra of Sri Lanka on July 8, in ‘Shani Diluka in Concert’ at the Lionel Wendt Theatre.

The programme will feature three great classical music compositions.

The concert will commence with Beethoven’s Egmont Overture. This dramatic overture full of energy and passion was written to accompany a play by Goethe about Count Egmont who fought for human freedom.

Schubert’s Symphony No. 8 in B minor, also known as the “Unfinished Symphony” follows. Although left unfinished by the composer, it is still considered one of his greatest works. Alfred Einstein declared “Schubert could never have finished the work for nothing could approach the originality, power, and skill of the first two movements.” The music is full of beauty and emotion, a moving testament to Schubert’s genius.

The second half of the concert will feature Shani performing Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No. 5 in E flat major. Also known as the “Emperor Concerto”, this is one of Beethoven’s most famous works.  It is considered to be one of the greatest piano concertos ever written, “music of sweeping imperious grandeur….” full of power and virtuosity, a true masterpiece.

Shani Diluka, writes of the ‘Emperor Concerto’ “this monumental 5th concerto is maybe the most beautiful one in many ways: Of course it is also very demanding with high virtuosity, but it is full of energy and hope, as he believed in human rights and fraternity. We feel this brotherhood in every note……!”

Shani Diluka describes the interaction of the piano with the orchestra as “a beautiful partition for the Orchestra, full of colours and dynamics. The dialogue with the Piano is essential and intense and I am so looking forward to working with the SOSL and their wonderful conductor Dushy Perera!”

Tickets and box plan are at the Lionel Wendt Theatre.
