The GFS Hall reached the grand age of 100 on June 23. It was a gift to the Girls’ Friendly Society by Charles Peiris, in memory of his daughter Elsie.

The Society was established in Sri Lanka in 1904 and functioned for many years without a building of its own to conduct meetings and programmes. This building which was opened on June 23, 1923 met that need and has served generations of girls and women over the years.

Records indicate that the Hall was used for training programmes, meetings, country dancing and the like. It was even used as a canteen for the armed forces in 1941. Today, the Hall is used by the Society to carry out projects such as blood donation camps, free eye testing and to conduct seminars on important health and social topics, as well as craft competitions and speech contests.

The Hall is also hired out for various functions.

A thanksgiving service will be held on July 15, 2023.
