Nuwanidu hits career best to help SSC pile up 421
A career-best 157 by Nuwanidu Fernando helped SSC reply strongly against Galle CC on day two of their Major Club League match played at Maitland Place yesterday. Resuming from their overnight score of 33-1, SSC were 421-8 at stumps, a first innings lead of 177 runs.
Apart from Fernando, who hit 25 boundaries in his 186-ball innings, Shevon Daniel (64) and Nipun Dhananjaya (69) contributed to the massive total. After losing openers cheaply, Fernando and Daniel resurrected the innings with a 157-run stand for the third wicket.
Skipper Sangeeth Cooray made the team’s second century in the match–an excellent 125 not out to put Colts in a strong position in their match against Kandy Customs at Thurstan ground. At stumps Colts lead by 366 runs with six wickets in hand. Angelo Mathews hit a first innings ton–124 as Colts scored 263 in the first essay and had Kandy Customs restricted for 172 runs with spinner Akila Dhananjaya claiming 8 for 61 runs.
Ragama CC were in firm control at stumps with a lead of 383 runs against BRC at the BRC grounds after Lahiru Thirimanna hit the team’s second century (103n.o.) in his comeback game to first class cricket in Sri Lanka. A ton by Sanjaya Chathuranga (102) in the first innings helped Ragama CC reach 305 before bowling BRC out for 143 in the first innings.
