View(s):

In a harmonious convergence of tradition and technology, SLIIT hosted a captivating event to commemorate Poson Poya Day. The Digital Poson Zone, an annual event organized by the SLIIT Interactive Media Students and Academic Staff, unfolded on June 3rd, 2023, leaving attendees spellbound with its innovative approach. The event was launched with the graceful participation of the Senior Deputy Vice-Chancellor - Prof. Nimal Rajapakse, Dean FOC – Dr. Nuwan Kodagoda, Head/CSSE – Dr. Kalpani Manathunga, Head/IT – Dr. Samantha Rajapaksha and several other staff members. The event was held in the main auditorium lobby.

As attendees entered the auditorium lobby, they were transported to a breathtaking 3D virtual landscape. The meticulously designed digital environment, adorned with vibrant lanterns and captivating visuals, offered an immersive experience like never before. Participants were given the freedom to explore the virtual SLIIT campus, wandering through its virtual streets and soaking in the beauty of the Poson-themed decorations.

The event received the gracious participation of Professor Nimal Rajapakse, SLIIT’s Senior Deputy Vice-Chancellor and Provost, who acknowledged the groundbreaking work achieved by the Interactive Media Students and Academic Staff. He added, “The success of the Digital Poson Zone can be attributed to the students’ innovative spirit and their adept use of advanced technologies. The event showcased their ability to bring imagination to life as they skillfully integrated virtual reality and augmented reality to create an immersive experience. The event highlighted the immense potential of merging tradition and technology. It showcased SLIIT’s commitment to nurturing creative minds capable of transforming the future.”

The highlight of the day was the integration of virtual reality (VR) technology, which took the immersive experience to new heights. Equipped with VR headsets, visitors were able to delve deeper into the virtual world, interacting with digital Thoranas and witnessing the mesmerizing Poson Bhakthi Gee performances. The innovative use of VR headsets truly brought the traditions of Poson Poya Day to life, creating an unforgettable experience for all. The event didn’t stop at virtual reality; it extended its boundaries to augmented reality (AR) as well. Android users had the opportunity to scan QR codes strategically placed around the venue, unlocking an AR experience that added another layer of engagement and excitement.

The success of the Digital Poson Zone would not have been possible without the dedicated efforts of numerous individuals. Supervised by Mr. Aruna Ishara Gamage, a lecturer at SLIIT Faculty of Computing – currently holding the position of Interactive Media Programme Coordinator, and with the contribution of numerous  Interactive Media students, as well as students from other student societies, the Digital Poson Zone event was a culmination of years of hard work. Mr. Anupama Iranga Rathnayake and Mr. Chathun Randika, alumni of SLIIT, played a vital role as advisors in the creation and deployment of the VR content, adding their expertise to the event’s success. The event involved the expertise and efforts of students specializing in game development, 3D modeling, music composition, video scripting, and content creation, among others. This collaborative endeavor took nearly three years to develop its 3D base content of the SLIIT campus over various module assignments, involving the dedication and commitment of both senior and current SLIIT undergraduates. The students poured their creativity and skills into the project, making it a truly comprehensive and immersive experience.

Dr. Nuwan Kodagoda, the Dean of the Faculty of Computing, expressed his delight in witnessing the fusion of technology and tradition. He added, “The Digital Poson Zone was a stellar testament to the incredible talent and dedication of our students. We are immensely proud of their innovative approach to blending tradition and technology to create a truly unforgettable experience. We aim to do more events like this in collaboration with all our student bodies in the years to come.”
