Plans for transformation in education sector, international help sought: Minister
View(s):Education Minister Susil Premajayantha said that plans are being devised to expand the teaching of English, Technology, Science and Educational Technology to bring about a structural and quality transformation in education.
The Minister made these comments this week during a discussion with executive officers of the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) in Washington and deputy administrator Anjali Kaur about development of education in Sri Lanka and its practical requirements.
The progress of the aid provided by USAID to Sri Lanka was also reviewed, and new approaches for improving the current solidarity were also examined.
USAID provides aid for sustainable development activities in Sri Lanka, and this discussion contributed to the continuation of the school mid-day meal programme, the minister noted.
The minister participated in this discussion before proceeding to the Commonwealth education forum held in Vancouver, Canada.
Minister Premajayantha was elected to the controlling board of the education forum of the Commonwealth in April this year to represent the Asian region. He expects to receive assistance at this meeting for a number of reconstructions in education in Sri Lanka including curriculum development, Information Technology teaching, and distance education.
